Download Preston Media ID3 Raw Tag Viewer. It's only about a 28K download - just seconds even on dial-up. ID3 Raw Tag Viewer requires Microsoft .Net Framework Version 2.0 (not just seconds - especially on dial-up) in order to run.

While my ID3TagBackup program will let you backup your ID3 tags and test your MP3s without ID3 tags, sometimes you just want to know what is going wrong. Perhaps you have a lot of tracks with broken tags and you want to do some testing to see which program is breaking them and how. That's where my ID3 Raw Tag Viewer can help. It will allow you to view the raw bytes in each frame in your tag. You can delete individual frames or the entire tag.

ID3 Raw Tag Viewer will display or delete ID3V1 and ID3V1.1 tags and will allow you to display, delete, or remove frames from ID3V2.2 and ID3V2.3 tags. It currently does not support ID3V2.4 tags.

You can learn more about ID3 tags at http://www.id3.org.

To use the ID3 Raw Tag Viewer program, you must have installed on your PC the Microsoft .Net Framework, Version 2.0. If you don't have it, get it from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

3-19-2007, Version 1.0.2634.37121 released which fixes a bug in the handling of ID3V2.2 tags preventing them from displaying properly.

Comments:
I'm doing battle with WMP11 adding several AlbumArt files (beyond the requisite Folder.jpg and AlbumArtSmall) to only some of my album folders (I don't want any, preferring to embed my art in each mp3 file). No other tagging program out there revealed what I found with yours...the 7 PRIV frames that got added to the tags (found not to be present in the folders that WMP wasn't adding the excess art to), probably due to my uneducated effort to correct album art problems a year ago in WMP10. I hope that future development of your program will include the ability to remove those tags en masse, but if I must I'll do them one song at a time. The files from which I've removed the PRIV frames work perfectly in WMP11, album art and all. Now I hope my success will materialize on my Creative Zen Vision M. Thanks for your efforts.

Thank you for your program, it was very helpful. One thing to note: I came across an error while trying to run the program from a network share. The program worked fine from a local drive. I know, this is probably my fault, I'm just mentioning it to let you know.

Also, I (an apparently others out there) really like your approach to MP3 tags. It seems that too many program just reveal their "default" tags. I like to be able to see the non-default ones (for example, I did not know that the encoder used to create the MP3 was in a tag, since no program lists it.)

I believe the next version of this program would allow the viewing of a directory or directory structure of MP3 files. I'm envinsioning an excel style table with the name of the tag, and what it means (TIT2 / Song Name) as the column headers with each file occuping a row. This would enable quick viewing of lots of MP3 files, and editing if needed. (My main reason for this is to remove extra information from files, like the CDDB lookup for iTunes, etc) Also, like Rick pointed out, this would finding duplicate tags (like his album art problem). It would be nice if the album art tag could be viewed as a picture also.

I know this is a lot to ask, I'm just providing ideas on what I would like, so you'll know at least one person out there needs a program like this.

Have a good one, and I look forward to viewing your blog often.

annon,

To run any .Net application from a network share requires some special security features like being signed and coming from a location configured on your own PC as a trusted location. That's whether the file is run from a network share or over the Internet. And it probably wouldn't hurt to move the file to a FAT volume and then back again in order to remove the alternate data streams attached by IE.

I have frame viewers for text, comment, and picture frames in an enhanced version of the raw tag viewer that I am developing as part of a larger wrapper for WMP.

Thanks for the unique tool. Frame count would be a nice addition.

This app seems to have stopped working for me on both my Vista and my XP box. Is it possible something with newer .NET version might cause it to crash? I know it USED to work but it's been a while since I fired it up.
